Therefore, Taiwan envisions a bilingual nation by 2030 and the writer will be part of it. Although it’s challenging to get the language gap, luckily, the environment of education in Taiwan is pleasant and friendly. The most important is love and kindness is the language of education. This is how the students should learn from every teacher.
English is one of the popular languages in the world. To speak and know by heart the language of the world can enable one to communicate with people and to understand its society and culture. Taiwan envisions a bilingual nation by 2030 and I am tasked to help achieve its mission. It is a great responsibility and I am honored to be chosen to be part of it.
There is a relative difference in teaching English to my home country. The students in my country are taught English the earliest possible. Parents would speak to their child using the English even before it was born, meaning, even it is just a fetus, some mothers would speak to their child in English! When it comes out, they make the baby listen to nursery rhymes endlessly, and make them watch Disney movies and TV programs all day long. These parents firmly believe that once their child can speak English, their child will be good in school. Parents think that movies and TV programs are the best way for the baby to learn English. The babies easily absorb the intonation and vocabulary from all these movies and cartoon characters. By the time the baby can speak, the influence from all these characters is glaringly evident, that which delight all adults. These children will be then taken to public Day Care Centers or private Nursery Schools as early as 2 years old to which they are taught English and the mother tongue language. Once this child enters formal school as kindergarten, its vocabulary is more extensive than those children who are not exposed to such privileges.

Here in Taiwan, school children must learn Chinese first. Our job as foreign English teachers begin in grade 2. Teaching the second language here has some challenges. I, for instance, struggle to get my message across to my class in grade 5 since there is no local English teacher with me and there are only 2 to 5 pupils who can understand English. Fortunately, these students help me bridge my message to the rest of the students in the class. These pupils who take English class after school have the advantage in my class. They easily grasp the lesson for the day and can finish the classroom activity ahead of their classmates. Some students do get the lesson just by listening carefully and taking in the visual materials as I made it more comprehensible using pictures, videos, and simple words. A foreign English teacher needs to take a lot of considerations in every lesson for all the second language learners. These learners require more visual and audio help that they can get in the process of acquiring the English language.
Furthermore, teaching English here in Taiwan is a pleasant and wonderful experience as the children are friendly and helpful. Also, there are some ways to communicate with these students apart from using the language and that is through love and kindness. They can feel the sincerity in the actions and in the manner by which you deal with them. Through this, they are encouraged to do good in every activity they are given. The language of education is love and kindness and every student can feel it from their foreign English teacher. |
