《ABSTRACT》
The Alternative Curriculum for Grade 3 in Minfu brings us more work. It is tiring to prepare both the “English class” and the alternative curriculum for one class. However, when seeing the students’ enthusiasm for it and their improvement, I think I can keep doing this.
About myself
I used to be a part time lecturer before I moved to Hsinchu. I taught Freshman English in several universities and extension courses for adults.
Before I started to teach in Minfu, I was worried about my interaction with young kids because I only have the experience of teaching young adults and adults. After I started my teaching here, I’ve been loving what I am doing. I get more feedback and interaction than from university students. My university students were not high in English though they started English from primary school. When I had the chance to teach in Minfu, I decided to do my best to have my students be aware of basic English knowledge and not be afraid of the language.
The alternative curriculum for grade 3
Minfu started the alternative curriculum for grade 3 from last semester. Since I am teaching this grade, I get the chance to do this. This is very different from the “English class.” There are no textbooks for us to use, and we don’t do the drills as in the “English class.” The school planned the 6-year theme according to our school-based curriculum. The English teachers work together to develop the curriculum for each grade. This is the second semester I have taught this curriculum. During the class time, I spoke mostly only English to students. Many of you will be wondering about if the students understand or not. Actually, it’s really not a big problem. I used a lot of pictures on the Power Point, and the topics are close to our daily life, so students are familiar with the topics and willing to respond whether with English or Chinese. For low level students, I found that they would observe other students’ answers and begin to understand what those students were saying, then they started to raise their hands to be called. Sometimes when I walked into the classroom, some students would come to me and ask if we were having the alternative class or not. If I said no, they would be very disappointed. Thus, it can be seen that students are happy to have this class.
When we were developing the curriculum, our school invited professor Chien from Tsing Hua University to help us. She gave us a lot of advice and that inspired us. We really thank her for so much help. Many of the ideas for the demonstration class also came from her.
Before teaching
The curriculum for this semester is “community”. To have the students be more aware of this topic, I used a well-known event “2021 Light Coming” to introduce this topic. “2021 Light Coming” in Hsinchu was really popular and a lot of people in Hsinchu have been to the event. Since it was not a long time ago, many students still remembered it. The “Projection Mapping Show” of this event was particularly awesome. I took advantage of the buildings from the show to introduce the community buildings and what people can do in them. I believed this would stimulate my students. As expected, the students liked this topic and were able to understand the concept more easily.

During teaching
During the demonstration, I used English most of the time to give the lecture. When introducing the names of those buildings, I put Chinese name next to them so my students would understand more easily.
I always encourage students to answer whether in English or Chinese. If they are able to answer, it means they understand the concept. Not every student in my class goes to English cram school, sometimes they don’t understand what I said. I would try to explain in simpler way or say the terms in Chinese. It is okay to use Chinese in this class, however, after teaching the curriculum for a semester, students seem to be more involved in the class and even if they couldn’t say the English words, they understand more of the English concept. I think it is good that they learn not only the concept but also increase their knowledge of English.
After teaching
I would like to thank the teachers from different schools for coming to my class and giving me all the praise, encouragement and suggestions. Also, my colleagues in Minfu helped me a lot; they gave me so much support. My students were very nervous because there were more teachers than students in the classroom; nevertheless, they did a great job. To my surprise, they said all the difficult words correctly and answered perfectly in English. I am so proud of them.
It is hard to have the normal English class and the alternative curriculum at the same time. We have to arrange the time for both. There are many things to do and sometimes I felt tired from preparing two different curriculums for one class. Still, it is worth it when seeing the students’ improvement.
