ICRT News for Kids---News Lunchbox

●Introduction
After using ICRT News Lunchbox as extending material for one semester, we found a lot of advantages for students. We’d like to share how we’ve done and what we’ve learned, and we’d also like to share our plan for next semester.
● Grade: Grade six
● Aims:

  1. To learn some deeper ideas extended from the textbook.
  2. To sharpen students’ listening skills.
  3. To broaden students’ reading experiences.

● Language focus:listening, reading and comprehension skills

● Instruction:
☆ At school☆
1st semester: Enjoy it during lunch time in some homerooms
“ICRT News Lunchbox” is a great radio program produced by ICRT and MOE. It could be listened to on the radio at 12:15~12:20 p.m. every Monday to Friday during the semester. You can also find and download the audio and the script from ICRT website. Only some homeroom teachers play the radio program during lunch time in the previous semester.

2nd semester: Enjoy it during lunch time in all 5th and 6th homerooms
It would be great if the office of academic affairs arranges to play “ICRT News Lunchbox for 5th and 6th graders. If students listen to the English program and get involved in the English-speaking environment every school day, that would be very helpful for improving students’ English listening skills.

☆At home☆
1stsemester: Encourage students to do the self-learning at home
According to the spirit of 12-Year Basic Education Curricula, students are expected to be life-long positive learners with teachers’ supports. It’s important to develop self-learning skill through good extending material that students are interested in. “ICRT News Lunchbox” is a kind of appropriate material for students to study after school.
In Dong Yuan Elementary School, we design a listening record card for students. Once they listen to the program for two times, they can ask for parents’ signature on theirlistening record card. Students can show the card with 10 signatures to their English teacher and get rewards.

2ndsemester: Encourage parents to support students’ self-learning at home
Parents’ support and supervision are the keys to success for student’s self-learning at home. We plan to introduce “ICRT News Lunchbox” and the listening record card to parents in the Parent-Teacher meeting. We’d also like to share the other choice “ICRT News Bite” (suitable for junior high school students) with parents for their high-level kids. The listening record card would be revised and be added a blank for writing three vocabularies each day. Coping new vocabularies is a good way to get familiar with new words.

☆ In English class ☆
1st semester: What we’ve done in the class
(1)Warm-up activity
The main part of the program audio is about 2 to 3 minutes. Teachers can take 1 to 2 minutes to check how students understand the story with 3 questions from the program script.
(2)Extending reading material
Teachers could choose some stories related to textbook unit topics as extending reading material.
In Dong Yuan, we make worksheets based on the program scripts. We also make video clips that help students make connection betweenaudio and contents.
(3)Reference for midterm and final exam
It could be a choice to put a simplified version of a related story into test paper. We ask for help from a foreign teacher to record the simplified story as a part of listening test, and use the same three questions from the program script to test students if they could understand the story.

2nd semester: What we’re going to do in the class
We’ll follow the previous strategies to get students involved with “ICRT News Lunchbox”. In fact, we’ve chosen four associated stories as extending learning material and made clips for the 2nd semester.

●Reflection:
1. Be successful with parents’ support.
Since English teachers don’t have enough time to lead students to study the stories of ICRT News Lunchbox. It’s important to have parents’ support to help students learn more at home.
We got some positive feedback about ICRT News Lunchbox from parents, and hope more and more parents agree with this.

2. Be confident with listening to ICRT program.
The lackof English-speaking environment is a common and serious issue for learning English in Taiwan. When some students found out they could understand some or most contents of ICRT News Lunchbox, they and their parents were excited to share with teachers.

3. Encouragement instead of compulsoriness.
In fact, “ICRT News Lunchbox” is more suitable for high-level and intermediate-level students. Slow learners might feel it too difficult to study because of the lack of English proficiency.
So we encourage students to listen to “ICRT News Lunch Box”with rewards instead of make it a homework.

4. Meet ICRT DJ at school
MOE and ICRT held a great activity “Meet ICRT DJ at your school”. One of the ICRT DJs and the staff came to the applying school. They chose one Elementary Schools and three junior high schools this semester. The host DJ introduced how a DJ works in a studio and had the students review some interesting knowledge of the program stories.
Luckily, Dong Yuan is one of the four schools that interacted with the amazing ICRT DJ and had a wonderful time.
